The Shadowpact is a team of magic based comic book superheroes created by Bill Willingham. They consist of magic employing heroes that have stalked the DC Universe for years, to the delight of fans of these long unused characters. They appear in their own on-going series published by DC Comics.

The Shadowpact was brought together to battle the Spectre during a prelude to the Infinity Crisis (2005) limited series crossover event, in the limited series called Days of Vengence (2005). The Spectre entity, now free of its human component, was manipulated into believing that all sources of magic were evil, and went on a rampage to destroy them all. Shadowpact was formed to stop the all-powerful Spectre, a seemingly hopeless task. The wizard Shazam revealed that the Shadowpact was the name taken by magic groups throughout history to battle hopeless causes. The name seemed to fit.

Shadowpact has always been associated with the Phantom Stranger, a mysterious figure who wanders the DC Universe appearing at times of magical danger and evil. These days, the Phantom Stranger appears in the role of narrator and occasional advisor to the group.

The Shadowpact members consist of:

1) Blue Devil – Daniel Cassidy, an ex-hollywood stuntman whose had a devil costume fused to him by mystical energy. Cassidy made the mistake later of dealing with the demon Neron resulting in his death and reincarnation as an actual demon. Cassidy is a former member of the Justice League, and is trying to resolve his demonic roots with his hero status.

2) Nightmaster – Jim Rook, a former singer in a rock band, found himself transported to another dimension called Myrra, where he gained the use of the Sword of Night, a sword with magical properties such as the ability to warn him of danger and to compel others to tell the truth. After a series of adventures in Myrra, Rook returned to Earth where he became involved with the mystic community, eventually becoming the proprietor of the Oblivion Bar.

3) Nightshade – Eve Eden, former princess of the desolate Land of Nightshades, can transform into a living shadow, manipulate darkness, and teleport using her access to her home dimension.

4) Ragman – Rory Regan is a Jewish rag shop owner inherited from his father, who comes into possession of a mystical rag suit, of which each rag is composed of the soul of a corrupt or evil individual, whose life force Rory utilizes to generate superhuman and magic abilities. Rory absorbs the souls of those he battles, incorporating them into his suit, making them part of his power source.

5) Detective Chimp – He’s a chimp granted by a mystic fountain with the power of human intelligence and the ability to speak the language of all animals, including human. Detective Chimp (or DC to his friends) was trained in detective skills. He is quite brilliant, though suffers from alcoholism.

6) Enchantress – June Moon, granted magic powers by a mysterious magical entity, was formerly a villain. She seemed to reform after a stint with the Suicide Squad. She is a VERY powerful sorceress.

The Blue Devil has been recently replaced by Zauriel, actual angel in the service of heaven, who has been given the mission of destroying Blue Devil to prevent him, as a hero in demonic form, from unknowingly making demons more popular among mortals. While Blue Devil seeks to solve this conundrum on his own, Zauriel has agreed to serve in Shadowpact in his place.

The headquarters of the Shadowpact is the Oblivion Bar, an establishment accessible only to mystics, and located in a magical dimension.
