Sequels)
A sequel is a follow-up story. It will typically use at least some of the same characters and plot elements of the original work.
By definition, the events in the sequel occur after those in the original work. If the follow-up work is created after the first work, but the events in it occur prior to those of the first work, the neologism "prequel" is used.
The term "direct sequel" implies that the new work immediately continues the story of the first work: the two works together composing one plot.
