Sentry is a fictional comic book superhero, owned by Marvel Comics. He is, without a doubt, one of the strangest superhero character ever created, a sort of horror riff on Superman. He currently works with Tony Stark and the Mighty (government sanctioned) Avengers.

The Sentry processes solar energy with a presumably limitless potential. He generates a powerful energy field that gives him the power of flight, super-strength, incredible durability, and high intelligence.

The Sentry’s weakness is his self-doubt. The more he operates as a superhero, the more his self-doubt grows. Eventually, it manifests itself as a creature known as the Void, which is a shadowy monster which exploits its enemy’s fears, capable of as much destruction and killing as the Sentry is of good and noble acts. The first time he came into being, the Void murdered over one million people.

The Sentry’s existence is known to only S.H.I.E.L.D., the Mighty Avengers, the Hulk, and select members of the superhero community. Traumatized by his collective experiences, the Sentry is an agoraphobic schizophrenic. He's scared of the world and terrified of himself. He's the most powerful superhuman on the planet, but his psychologically damaged nature makes him powerless to act under many circumstances.

Character Origin

High school student Bob Reynolds becomes the Sentry when he steals and drinks a serum of a mysterious professor in an attempt to get high. Bob then develops super-powers, and uses them to trounce a school bully. After that experience, he makes a superhero costume for himself, and calls himself the Sentry. This happened a few years before Reed Richards accidentally turned himself, his girl friend, her brother, and his best friend into the Fantastic Four.

He battles Dr. Doom along side the Fantastic Four, and defeats his arch nemesis, the Crazed General, with the help of the X-Men. He seems to have a peculiar calming affect on the Hulk, and becomes one of his true friends. Under the Sentry’s influence, the Hulk, who calls the sentry “Golden Man”, becomes a force for good. Bob marries the beautiful Lindy, and even has a teen sidekick named Billy Turner, known to the world as Scout. The Sentry also has a headquarters called the Watchtower on top of Stark Tower. The Sentry wins the public trust and everything is going great, until the coming of the Void.

The Void nearly kills Scout, causes the Hulk to go on a rampage, and murders a million people. The Sentry eventually understands that he was the source of the Void. He works with Richards and Doctor Strange to develop a computer servant called C.L.O.C., built into his headquarters in the Watchtower, causing everyone, including them, to forget the Sentry’s existence. This works on everyone but the Hulk, and the Void is dispelled.

Years later, the Sentry’s memory slowly begins to return. When the Void manifests himself in Europe, the Sentry goes to his former friends for help, but, of course, they don’t remember him, and write him off as insane. The Sentry can’t remember why nobody remembers him, only that the Void is coming.

Eventually convincing them that his claims are legitimate, the heroes gather together to take on the Void. As more of Bob’s memories return to him, he realizes what to do. The devices in the Watchtower are activated again. They erase his memories again, and the Void is dispelled.

Later, when his memories begin to return again, the Sentry demands that he be imprisoned in the superhero prison called the Raft. At this time the Sentry claims his incarceration is justified because he had killed his wife, but no one seems to be able to confirm this. After a major jailbreak at the Raft, Sentry helps the team that would become the New Avengers recapture many criminals.

Later still, it is discovered that Bob’s wife is indeed alive, and the Void seemed to be, at least for now, under control. The Sentry works for a while with the New Avengers until the Civil War crossover series splits the superhero community. Sentry is now working with S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Mighty (government sanctioned) Avengers, who, fearing the return of the Void and being aware of Robert’s psychological fragility, only draw on him during the gravest of emergencies.
