Sentience, occasionally referred to as consciousness, is the state of being aware; the ability to sense and perceive subjectively. The determination of sentience is at the heart of the debate regarding animal rights and how future artificial life forms who have awareness should be treated.
The adjectival form is sentient, as in sentient being or sentient computer.
