Sensor Girl and Princess Projectra are fictional comic book superheroes owned by DC Comics and part of the 31st century superhero team, the Legion of Super-Heroes.
Princess Projectra
Projectra is a true princess, the only child of King Voxv on the planet Orando. Orando is not a full member world of the United Planets, but is under its protection. Orando is not a typical Legion origin world. Instead of being built on 31st century technology, it is a feudal and mystical culture. Hagga the sorceress chose the princess for special magical training. She gave Projectra the power to create incredibly realistic illusions. Hagga felt that, as a future ruler, she needed to understand the universe outside their planet, so she sends young Projectra out to live among the United Planets member worlds.
Projectra finds herself bored and lonely. Hearing of the Legion of Super-Heroes, she thinks that they might make suitable friends and peers. She applies for membership. At the try-outs, she wows the Legion by making them believe they are floating on the bottom of the ocean one moment, and then floating in outer space the next. The effect is dramatic. Very impressed with her power, she gains instant membership. Cosmic Boy says, “Any gal that can throw the whole Legion into a panic gets my vote.”
Trying out and gaining membership that same day was Karate Kid, who was destined to be her husband, and Nemesis Kid, who was destined to kill her husband and be executed by Projectra herself.
Finding the companionship she is looking for, all her Legionnaire friends are soon calling her "Jeckie". She begins to date Karate Kid.
Sensor Girl
After King Voxv dies, Projectra and Karate Kid, then engaged, retire from the Legion and move to Orando where Projectra becomes Queen. The young couple are married in a true fairy tale wedding. While away on their honeymoon the Legion of Super-Villains come in and take over the planet. The Legion of Super-Heroes arrive, and defeat the Villians, but not before Nemesis Kid (now a member of the Super-Villains) kills Karate Kid.
This incident plays into Orando's isolationist tendencies, and Projectra takes Orando into another dimension to isolate them from the “corrupting influence” of the 31st century.
But the ruling Council of Orakills blames Projectra for bringing the Super-Villains to Orando. They strip her of her royal heritage and send her to into exile in a new identity, Sensor Girl. Forbidden to ever trade on her heritage, Projectra was admonished not to reveal who she was as she wandered the galaxy and, to this end, she wore a mask as part of her costume. Saturn Girl, probably through her mind-reading powers, found out about her plight, and recommended Sensor Girl for membership in the Legion. In this way, Sensor Girl becomes the Legion’s first masked superhero with a secret identity.
To prevent them from guessing her identity, Sensor Girl uses her illusion casting powers to disguise the exact nature of her abilities. Her ability to sense and locate hidden objects and the truth behind illusions, make the Legionnaires think she has super-vision and super-hearing. She would sometimes accomplish something one way, and make the Legionnaires think she had done it another way. Projectra’s powers are much stronger than they were when she first joined the Legion, and she can now totally control what everyone around her saw, sensed and felt. After a time, the rest of the Legionnaires were to learn who she was and the story behind it, but the public still doesn’t know the true identity of Sensor Girl.
Other Versions
It is interesting to note that Projectra's story changes somewhat in the two Legion reboots. In the first reboot, the one right after Zero Hour, Projectra is a giant sentient snake, from a world of giant sentient snakes. She applies in humanoid form, which she creates with her illusion powers. This Projectra seems to fall for Chameleon (that version's Chameleon Boy), whose Durlan multi-form nature sees her as quite beautiful.
Many hard core Legion fans where aghast at this change, and we are certain that this next reboot's Projectra will be an actual humanoid.
