Sci Fi Acronyms)
FLA (Fandom Loves Acronyms)! An acronym is specific form of initialism, a pronounceable term that is made up of the initials of other words, or parts of other words. They can be used for convenience (to replace a long, unwieldy title, for example), or simply because it sounds good or suggests a meaning.
One special category is a "backronym": a term that was not originally intended to be an acronym, but for which words have been suggested. For example, Scifipedia is a "wiki". The term was not originally an acronym, but some use it to mean "What I Know Is".
Acronyms are frequently used in science fiction. This may be influenced by the prominence of acronyms in science (SCUBA, RADAR, LEM, etc.). They appear in books, movies, tv series, fandom, and so on.
