Before the Crash
Sayid attended Cairo University before becoming a communications officer in the Iraq Republican Guard. He served in the army for five years. He was captured by US forces during Desert Storm. He was recruited by Sergeant Major Sam Austen to interrogate his commanding officer Tariq hoping to find the location of a captured US pilot. He was convinced to torture Tariq for the information after being shown a video of his village being attacked with nerve gas on Tariq's orders. Following the end of his service to the Americans he was released with a large sum of money and Austen assured him his skills would one day be of use.
Sayid returned to the Republican Guard and he was promoted to the Intelligence Divison and assigned to interrogate revels and military prisoners using torture. While there he was tasked with interrogating his childhood love, Nadia. He was ordered to kill her but helped her escape shooting his commanding officer, Omar, and himself in the leg. She left him with a photo of herself inscribed with the words "You will see me in the next life, if not in this one" in Arabic.

It's usually best to give a very general overview to a story first, then plot details. When including the plot or essential details in your article (which could ruin the pleasure of discovery for some readers), it is important to include the spoiler tag before any give-away material.
