Colonel Saul Tigh (played by Michael Hogan), on The SCI FI Channel TV series Battlestar Galactica, is Executive Officer of the Galactica. He's the best man to have at your side—even if he is too tightly wound, moody, prone to outbursts of temper, and a highly functional alcoholic.

Early life

Tigh is a native of Aerelon. He joined the Colonial Fleet as a teen and served as a deckhand. During the First Cylon War, he served as a gunner's mate on the Brenik. He was injured in a hand-to-hand battle with Centurions but managed to survive. The ship was eventually destroyed as was his next ship assignment. He was eventually promoted to Chief Petty Officer but when Viper Pilot numbers began to fall, he was drafted for Colonial Officer Candidate School and underwent training to become a Viper pilot. He proved skilled in combat and earned several medals while serving on the Battlestar Athena.

At the end of the war, Tigh was dismissed and relegated to work as a deckhand on a commercial freighter. His post -traumatic stress led to his problem with alcohol. It was there that he met Bill Adama and the two quickly became friends. Adama was determined to rejoin the Fleet and succeeded in being reinstated as a Major. Two years later, with Adama's help, he also was reinstated as a captain.

After the Cylon Attack

Tigh turned over a new leaf and made an effort to give up alcohol. His efforts were thwarted when his wife, Ellen, a promiscuous woman whose exploits have embarrassed him, returned. Having believed she had been killed during the attacks, he was surprised to hear she had survived and had been unconscious aboard the Rising Star. His wifes manipulation and determination to push him towards a more powerful position in the fleet led him to drink heavily.

Season 2

Following Adama's attempted assassination, she pushed him to establish his power and take a harder line with the fleet. His efforts were met with a lack of respect from the crew, well aware of his drinking. Not truly wanting to be in command to but forced to manage the situation in Adama's absence and pushed to truly take over by Ellen, he declared martial law and disbanded the Quorum of Twelve.

With the supply ships refusing to resupply Galactica until President Laura Roslin was released, Tigh ordered Viper pilots to forcibly retrieve pilots leading to a riot in which the pilots opened fire, killing four civilians on the Gideon ("Resistance"). As the commanding officer, Tigh should have taken responsibility for the situation but instead blamed the pilot in charge of the situation.

He was extremely relieved when Adama recovered and returned to command. Despite the many and severe problems created during Tigh's command, Adama did not come down hard on Tigh but simply moved on. His performance during the Gideon incident would later return to haunt him, however. Lt. Joe "Hammerhead" Palladino, the pilot responsible during the Gideon incident vandalized Tigh's quarters, sabotaged his Raptor and eventually held his wife hostage and threatened to kill Tigh. Tigh managed to defuse the incident before anyone could be hurt, and Palladino was taken down without incident (Final Cut").

Despite Tigh's many incidences of opposing President Laura Roslin's role as president and what he considered interference with Adama's command, he worked with Petty Officer Anastasia Dualla in rigging the election in her favor in order to avoid Gaius Baltar winning the election. Lt.Gaeta became suspicious of the colonel's behavior leading to a revelation of the plot. Adama convinced Roslin not to steal the election and did not penalize Tigh or Dualla.

Season 3

Following the election, the fleet settled on New Caprica. Tigh remained on Galactica until Adama discharged him and he and Ellen settled on the planet. It becomes clear that something special has happened between him an pilot Kara Thrace. The two initially opposed each other and Tigh believed her to be irresponsible and insubordinate. Previous attempts by Kara to settle their differences were unsuccessful but she greeted him warmly when he arrived on New Caprica. Shortly after, The Cylons arrived and the occupation began.

Tigh was imprisoned by the Cylons and tortured. In the process, his eye was torn out. His wife, Ellen, offered sexual favors to the Cylon Cavil in exchange for his release. Following his release, he joined the Cylon resistance and alongside Galen Tyrol and Samuel Anders organized various attacks and a suicide bombing of the New Caprica police graduation ceremony. Tigh's role in the resistance was pivotal to the rescue of the fleet from New Caprica by Galactica. He was later informed by Anders that his wife had betrayed them to the Cylons and told to take care of her. Tigh poisoned his wife, a situation that caused him significant pain and continues to affect him

His anger over what happened on New Caprica led him and Kara Thrace to cause division in the fleet between those who had suffered on Caprica and those who jumped away with Galactica and Pegasus. He became a leader in a tribunal known as "The Circle" charged with trying, judging, and executing those believed guilty of cooperating with the Cylons. Tigh continued to drink heavily, becoming increasingly confused.

He resumed his position as XO in the episode "Unfinished Business". In "Crossroads, Part 1", he began hearing a strange piece of music. His attempts to find the source were written off by others as a part of his drunkenness. He was called on to testify during the trial of Gaius Baltar and took the stand drunk. He blamed Baltar for his wife's death but admitted he had killed her himself. In "Crossroads, Part 2" the mysterious music continued to plague him becoming more intense following the fleet's jump to the Ionian Nebula and the subsequent fleet-wide blackout. He became drawn to a location where he came across three others and they realize that they are are all likely Cylons.
