Sarek (2165 -2368) is a fictional character in the Star Trek universe portrayed by Mark Lenard. Sarek was a United Federation of Planets ambassador and most famous to Star Trek viewers as the father of the half human and half Vulcan Enterprise first officer Mr. Spock.
Sarek is a Vulcan, and as such has most of the Vulcan racial characteristics. He has pointed ears, arched eyebrows, a tall, slender body, and superior strength and intellect when compared to humans. He is also dedicated to the principle of logic and believes in it as a guiding principle to life, and in suppressing all emotional responses.
Despite all this, Sarek also believes in the Vulcan principle of "infinite diversity in infinite combinations" and, as such, is a big supporter in the Vulcan's membership in the United Federation of Planets, of which Earth and Vulcan are both key and founding members.
Less predictably, Sarek married a human named Amanda Grayson, whom he met while assigned to the Vulcan Embassy on Earth. With Amanda, he fathered the hybrid child named Spock.
Vulcan's have a longer life span than humans, and lived long enough to develop a strong relationship with Jean-Luc Picard, the Captain of the Enterprise-D and lead character of the TV series Star Trek: The Next Generation. Spock had a sometimes rocky relationship with his father, particularly strained by his decision to give up life on Vulcan for a career in Starfleet. At the time of his death, Sarek was able to mind-meld with Captain Picard, who, in turn, mind melded with Spock after Sarek's death, enabling Spock to experience certainty about his father's love and pride for his hybrid son.
Sarek appeared on Journey to Babel, a TV episode of Star Trek: The Original Series. He also appeared in the third movie in the Star Trek movie series, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, and in two episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation, "Sarek (TNG episode)" and "Unification, Part 1 (TNG episode)".
