Sailor Moon aka Bishōjo Senshi Sērā Mūn or Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon is a Japanese anime series created by manga artist Naoko Takeuchi. The series focuses on a team of magical girls known as Sailor Senshi/Sailor Scouts, who use their powers to defend against evil. The team, led by Sailor Moon, are actually the reincarnated defenders of a long lost kingdom on the moon sent to Earth to save them from the evil that destroyed the Moon kingdom. In addition to the manga series, Sailor Moon has been divided into five anime television series, making it the longest running of the magical girl anime series. The franchise also sparked a vast merchandising campaign and expanded into a live-action series, musical theater, and video games.
Characters
- Usagi Tsukino transforms into Sailor Moon. Known as Serena in the English version, she is the team leader and is a clutzy and somewhat immature schoolgirl who nevertheless has a pure heart and innate goodness.
- Mamoru Chiba transforms into Tuxedo Mask. Darien, in the English version, he is Usagi's destined love who becomes a tuxedo wearing masked hero who throws roses.
- Ami Mizuno transforms into Sailor Mercury. Amy, in the English version, is a genius with powers over ice.
- Rei Hino transforms into Sailor Mars is known as Raye Hino in the English version. She is a hot tempered Shinto priestess who constantly argues with Usagi and initially competes for Mamoru's attentions. She has powers over fire.
- Makoto Kino transforms into Sailor Jupiter. Known as Lita in the English version of the series, Makoto is athletic and loyal tomboy with powers over plants.
- Minako Aino transforms into Sailor Venus, a well-known superhero on her own as Sailor V before joining the team. She is known as Mina in the English version. Minako has powers over love.
- Chibiusa is a young girl from the future, known as Rini in the English version. Chibiusa transformed into Sailor Chibi Moon and later Sailor Mini Moon.
- Setsuna Meioh is a mysterious woman who transforms into Sailor Pluto the guardian of time. She is known as Trista in the English version of the series.
- Michiru Kaioh transforms into Sailor Neptune. Michiru, known as Michelle in the English series, is a talented violinist with powers over water.
- Haruka Tenoh a tomboy and masculine woman who transforms into Sailor Uranus. Haruka is known as Amara in the English version. She loves racing and athletic competitions. Haruka has powers over the earth.
- Hotaru Tomoe transforms into Sailor Saturn, the daughter of a mad scientist possessed by a Daemon. Hotaru is a sickly young girl whose powers over death and rebirth could destroy the world.
Manga
The original series, created and drawn by Naoko Takeuchi, was an expansion of her earlier series Codename wa Sailor V.
Anime
The Sailor Moon anime was produced by Toei Animation. The entire series consists of five separate television series, and not continuous seasons as many American fans presume. The series consisted of Sailor Moon, Sailor Moon R, Sailor Moon S, Sailor Moon SuperS, and Sailor Stars.
In addition to the TV series, three films were produced as well as additional animated short films. The movies were Bishōjo Senshi Sailor Moon R: The Movie, Bishōjo Senshi Sailor Moon S: The Movie and Bishōjo Senshi Sailor Moon SuperS: The Movie.
English Series
DiC Entertainment acquired the rights to air the first 72 episodes of the series. Several episodes were eliminated and other edits were made to the aired series.
