Sagittaron is a fictional planet in the Battlestar Galactica universe. The planet is one of the Twelve Colonies of Kobol. According to the comics based on the series, the Colonial government created the Cylons to lessen the human work load throughout the colonies but neglected Sagittaron in this advancement. As a result, the Sagittarons continued to toil to produce supplies for the other colonies. One of their exports was the processed Nitrassium. When the Cylons eventually turned against humanity, the colonial government enacted a procreation incentive which families like that of Tom Zarek took advantage of.
Religion
Sagittarons share the basic religious beliefs of the other colonists. Their practice is far more stringent however. Sagittarons are known for believing that medicine is an abomination and a sin against the gods. They practice herbal medicine which has been received with skepticism by medical professionals from other colonies ("The Woman King"). Adding to their poor reputation among the other colonies is the fact that the Sagittarons did not fight the Cylons on New Caprica. When combined with Anastasia Dualla's father's opposition to her joining the military, it seems possible the Sagittarons are pacifists.
Notable Natives
Sagittaron natives include Anastasia Dualla, Leon Grimes, and Valance. Its most notable and outspoken representative, is Tom Zarek. Zarek grew up in a working class family. His father, Jerome, worked processing Nitrassium and was killed attempting to steal medicine for his sick wife, Karen. He eventually lost both parents to violence which served to increase his hatred of Colonial government. Determined to end the colony's near enslavement he became a a leader in the Sagittaron Freedom Movement.
Sagittaron Freedom Movement
The SFM began as underground organization but grew increasingly violent in its methods. The SFM blew up the Labor Ministry Building in Sagittaron City. Zarek was arrested and jailed for the crime.
