SG-1

From SCIFIPEDIA

SG-1 is the primary reconnaissance unit of Stargate Command and one of the first teams formed and tasked with finding technology to defend Earth. This mission was expanded to include the investigation of alien civilizations through archaeological and anthropological study. SG-1 represents Earth and the SGC and is often tasked with initiating first contact with alien civilizations, diplomacy, negotiation, and technological assessment.

Original Team Members

The initial team consisted of:

 • Colonel Jack O'Neill as commanding officer and the only member of the team to have gone through the stargate on the first mission to Abydos.
 • Dr. Captain Samantha Carter as second in command. Captain Carter was an Air Force captain as well as a theoretical astrophysicist whose work with the gate enabled its operation. She was partly responsible for the programming of the Dialing Computer and calculating the stellar shift that allowed Earth's stargate to connect to other planets.
 • Dr. Daniel Jackson is an archaeologist whose contributions proved surprisingly valuable. His translations and theories provided the information necessary to make the first connection to Abydos. Dr. Jackson joined the team primarily to find his wife and brother-in-law who'd been taken as hosts by the goa'uld. His presence provided a much needed counter balance to military presence. Over the years his diplomatic approach to situations often proved to be pivotal in dealing with alien races.
 • Teal'c was an alien defector who joined the team at the request of Jack O'Neill. His knowledge of the goa'uld was highly valuable. His personal goals were to free his fellow Jaffa from goa'uld enslavement. Teal'c enjoys a close friendship with O'Neill and the muscle he provided has helped the team get out of more than a few difficult situations.

Changes

After six years and many adventures together, Dr. Jackson died as a result of massive radiation poisoning and Ascended to a higher plane of existence. In his place, Jonas Quinn of the planet Langara, joined the team. Jonas was a quick study and had an eye for detail, an extensive knowledge base and vast curiosity. He proved an ideal replacement for Dr. Jackson. Jackson returned a year later when he was forced out of the ascended plane and Jonas returned to Langara.

In Season eight, Jack O'Neill was promoted to the rank of General and took over command of the SGC. SG-1 was reduced to a three-member team with Carter in command.

At the beginning of season nine SG-1 was disbanded. General O'Neill moved on to Homeworld Security and was replaced at the SGC by General Hank Landry. Major Carter moved on to work at Area 51 and Teal'c was occupied on Dakara advising the newly formed Jaffa High Council.

After the battle over Antarctica, Major Cameron Mitchell, an F-302 pilot was severely injured. While in recovery, he was offered command of SG-1 by General O'Neill. He fully expected to join the existing team but discovered there wasn't one. With patience, perseverance, and coercion, he managed to lure the members of the team back, returning it to a four-man team.

In Season ten, Vala Mal Doran a former goa'uld host, fortune hunter, trader and con woman, became an official member of SG-1 after undergoing a probationary period.

Accomplishments

Of all SG teams, SG-1 is the most respected and resilient. Despite having been captured, tortured, and even having died several times, they've always managed to survive to save the planet one more time. One would need all ten fingers to count the times SG-1 has saved Earth from destruction. They've rescued several other planets as well. They've been directly or indirectly responsible for the death and downfall of Apophis, Anubis, Sokar, Nirrti, Cronus and Hathor among others.

Seasons 1 — 5

 • Disobeyed direct orders, traveled offworld and ultimately destroyed Apophis' motherships before they could reach Earth.
 • Formed an alliance with the Tok'ra
 • Carters ideas and Jack's actions saved Earth from a blackhole
 • Carter and Teal'c thwarted an alien attempt to take over the SGC and the planet
 • Saved Earth from being overrun by Replicators
 • Carter's ideas saved the Asgard homeworld from replicators
 • Reformed the team in the future to prevent humanity's extinction at the hands of the Aschen.
 • Daniel's investigations prevent Earth from forming an alliance with the Aschen

Seasons 6 —10

 • Prevented Earth's destruction via the Stargate which was attacked by Anubis and ultimately destroyed in a massive explosion in space.
 • Helped the Asgard engage a time-dilation field to trap the Replicators
 • Helped Jonas Quinn prevent the destruction of his homeworld as a result of naquadriah chain reaction
 • Jack O'Neill risks his life and downloads the Ancient Repository of Knowledge and ultimately leads the team to the discovery of the Atlantus Outpost in Antarctica. The discovery led to the destruction of Anubis fleet as it attacked Earth
 • Jack O'Neill's Ancient knowledge helped the Asgard create a weapon to defend against the Replicators.
