Rutger Hauer

Rutger Olsen Hauer (b. January 23, 1944) is a Dutch actor, and producer born in Bruekelen, Utrecht, Netherlands to actors Arend and Teunke. His parents ran an acting school in Amsterdam and Hauer began appearing on stage at five. He made his TV debut in Asmodée. At 15, he ran away from home on a Dutch Merchant Navy freighter which took him around the world. He discovered a talent for languages and easily mastered English, German, French, and Italian. He returned to The Netherlands and to school, working odd jobs during the day and studying at night. He also pursued his love of cars and motorcycles experimenting with dangerous stunts.

Career

Hauer studied acting in Amsterdam but left school to join the army. He soon discovered the military was not for him and returned to acting school. Following his studies he worked in theater traveling The Netherlands. Hauer made his film debut in the 1969 film Monsieur Hawarden; his scenes were cut from the final version. He also gained success in television, appearing in the series Floris, a medieval action series.

In 1973, he was cast in Turks Fruit also known as Turkish Delight directed by Paul Verhoeven. The film proved successful and he followed up with his first English language film, The Wilby Conspiracy, a dramatic British film set in South Africa starring Michael Caine and Sidney Poitier. He returned to Dutch film, starring in Keetje Tippel/ Katie Tippel, Soldaat van Oranje/Soldier of Orange and Het Jaar van de kreeft/Cancer Rising.

Hauer made his American film debut as a villain in Nighthawks with Sylvester Stallone. His next major film was the Scifi classic, Blade Runner in which he starred as Roy Batty, an android. Other notable roles in the eighties include Ladyhawke with Matthew Broderick and Michelle Pfeiffer, another Verhoeven film, Flesh and Blood, the 1986 horror, The Hitcher and 1989's The Blood of Heroes.

Genre roles in the 90s include Wedlock, in which he starred as Frank Warren with Mimi Rogers and Joan Chen. Several low budget action features followed including Beyond Justice, Past Midnight and Joss Whedon's comedic vampire flick Buffy the Vampire Slayer in which he played Buffy's evil nemesis Lothos. He also appeared in 1996's Crossworlds, Omega Doom, Bleeders, and Deathline.

In 1997, Hauer appeared as Bog in the mini-series Lexx: The Dark Zone as Bog. He also guest starred on the series in the episode "Eating Pattern". In 1998, he took on the role of King Vortiegern in the TV movie Merlin. He followed up with the horror film Bone Daddy and the TV mini series The 10th Kingdom in which he played Huntsman.

The 21st century brought Flying Virus, guest appearances on Alias as Anthony Gieger, Smallville as Morgan Edge and Batman Begins as Earle. He also appeared in the TV movie Salem's Lot, the hit film Sin City with Bruce Willis, Dracula III: Legacy as Dracula, The Poseidon Adventure TV movie, Minotaur and 7eventy 5ive. Upcoming roles include The Magic Flute, and Spoon.

Personal Life

Hauer has one daughter, Aysha Hauer, and a grandchild. He married Ineke ten Kate in 1985, though the couple has been together since 1968.
