The Romulan Star Empire is a major power existing in the Alpha/ Beta quadrants of the Milky way Galaxy in the Star Trek universe.
Overview
The Romulan homeworld 'Romulus' has been home to the Romulan people for over 2000 years .The Romulans are descended from the Vulcan people but they left 'Vulcanis' during the time of the enlightenment. It was at this time that Surak's teachings were becoming integrated into Vulcan society. The ancestors of Romulans disagreed with these teachings and so left for another world to call their own.
The Romulans are a secretive race and sometimes display almost xenophobic qualities, even though the Star empire represents a significant part of Alpha quadrant politics.They believe that if knowledge is power then to be unknown is to be unconquerable. To that end, the Star Empire developed the cloaking device to render their vessels undetectable to an enemy vessels scanners.
Romulan Government
The Romulan Star Empire has some qualities which are reminiscent of the ancient Roman Empire. The ruling body of the Star Empire is the Senate. The ruling head of this government is known as the Preator. However Romulan politics are very complex and different parties can seize control of the senate through assassination and/or shifts in political power.
The Romulan Star Empire predates the Federation and first contact was made with this race in the 22nd century during earth's warp 5 program. The Romulans are a very manipulative race and prefer to manipulate events in the Alpha Quadrant through sabotage and espionage rather than engaging in all out war. The department of espionage and sabotage is known as the 'Tal Shiar' ( pronounced Tal She-are), a secret service of the Star empire. The 'Tal Shiar' has a significant influence in the star empire and in the senate.Agents of this department are held in the highest regard in the military and Romulan populace and are respected due to the fear their position entails. The Romulan Star Empire is opposed to the Federation-Klingon alliance in the 24th century and many attempts were made by the 'Tal Shiar' to destabilize the political situation
Romulan Political stance
The Romulan Star Empire has a non aggression pact with the Federation and Klingon Empire since the 23rd century . Their political stance did not change in the 24th century although they did sign a brief military alliance to fight the 'Dominion' during the Dominion war (2373-2375).
Romulan Military
The Romulan fleet is composed of cruisers and warbirds. These vessels use an artificial energy Singularity as their power source.The Romulan warbird of the 24th century is a significant battleship much larger than a typical Federation vessel. The design of the warbird altered significantly between the 23rd century and the 24th during a time in which there was very little contact between the star empire and the Federation.
