Doctor Meredith Rodney McKay is a fictional character in the TV series Stargate Atlantis, and is played by David Hewlett. His character originated in the parent series, Stargate SG-1, with his first appearance in the episode "48 Hours." Rodney is a brilliant scientist, with degrees in astrophysics and engineering. He is also Earth's leading expert on the Stargate. He is currently the lead scientist on the Atlantis expedition and is a member of Major John Sheppard's team.

Character

McKay's brilliance is surpassed only by his belief in his own brilliance. He is arrogant, sarcastic, condescending, and a bit of a hypochondriac. Despite this, he manages to be likable and makes up for his less-pleasant characteristics with his intelligence and ability to work well under stress, delivering results laced with sarcastic witticisms. McKay dominates the series as one of the show's most interesting, well-developed, and humorous characters.

His polarizing personality has resulted in a clash with Lt. Colonel Samantha Carter, also an astrophysicist and Stargate expert. McKay worked on a model of the Antarctic Stargate before being introduced to the real thing for the first time in the episode "48 Hours." In the episode, he undermined Carter's attempts to rescue Teal'c, who was being held inside the Stargate's buffer. He gave the Pentagon a deadline by which they could abandon rescue attempts and resume operations, based on his belief that Teal'c was already dead. He jeopardized Teal'c's life and angered Carter and General Hammond. Fortunately, despite his efforts, Teal'c was rescued and McKay was reassigned to Russia to work on their naquadah reactor project.

McKay was next seen in the episode "Redemption" in which he returned to the SGC to help solve a problem with the gate that was the result of an attack by Anubis. Despite open hostility and mistrust from Carter, the two managed to work together to a successful solution, but not without incident. McKay attempted to smooth over his relationship with Carter by acknowledging that he lacked her creativity. He confides that as a child he was very interested in being a pianist but was discouraged by his teacher because he lacked artistry. He followed scientific pursuits, believing artistry wasn't required. After meeting Carter, however, he realized her approach to science was far more artistic, an approach he admired and was disappointed to realize he didn't possess.

Samantha Carter became much more to Rodney than a professional rival and sometime crush. Despite referring to her as a "dumb blonde" in "48 Hours," McKay respects her greatly and considers her something of a professional role model. In the episode "Grace Under Pressure," McKay is stuck in a Puddle Jumper thousands of feet beneath the ocean, and has a hallucination of Sam to help him get through the situation.

Since joining the Atlantis expedition, McKay's character has grown significantly. Surrounded by people who have come to understand him better than he does himself, he is forced to be creative on demand and come up with quick solutions. His teammates accept his penchant for whining, ignore his hypochondria, and push him to go beyond what he thinks he's capable of. Despite constantly berating his fellow scientists, he has their respect. His main failing in regard to other Atlantis scientists is that he fails to acknowledge their competence or trust them to do their jobs without him.

He has made grave missteps. In "Trinity", he was convinced he could fix a failed Ancient technology that would result in a power source greater than that of a ZPM. Unfortunately, despite warnings from fellow scientist Doctor Radek Zelenka, he initiated the device and was unable to control the power output. As a result, one scientist died and a large portion of a solar system was destroyed, and he and Sheppard had to be rescued by the Daedalus. Sheppard's trust in him was diminished.

His relationship with Sheppard has since mended and he has developed a strong relationship with his other teammates Teyla and Ronon Dex. His courage and willingness to take risks on the behalf of others has also grown significantly. While his natural inclination toward self preservation remains strong, he has proven himself dependable and despite having no qualms about expressing his fear, can overcome it to do what is necessary.

Biography

McKay is Canadian. He has one sister, Jeannie Miller, although they are not emotionally close. His real-life sister played the role in the season 3 episode "McKay and Mrs. Miller." Prior to the events of the episode, he had not seen or spoken to her in four years after he disagreed with her decision to quit school, marry and have children rather than pursue greater heights in physics. He also has a neice, Madison.

In the episode it was revealed that McKay's real first name is Meredith; his sister calls him "Mer". It is implied that McKay's father encouraged his children's scientific pursuits and desired that they work together.

Although he's a hypochondriac, he does have at least one legitimate ailment: He's allergic to citrus. He also overprotects himself from the sun on account of his fair skin.

McKay built his first atomic weapon for a sixth grade science fair exhibit and was questioned by the CIA who believed he might have been part of a secret pre-teen organization. He did not win the science fair. ("Underground")

Major Life Events

  • He was once beamed up by a Wraith Dart that was shot down. When Zelenka reconstituted him, he discovered he had the mind of Lieutenant Laura Cadman stuck inside his own.
  • He learns to depend on others when Zelenka helps to rescue him from a sunken puddlejumper in "Grace Under Pressure."
  • He becomes dependent on Wraith serum when Aiden Ford puts it into his food in the episode "Lost Boys." He overdoses on the substance so he can overpower his captors and warn Atlantis of Ford's plans.
  • In "McKay and Mrs. Miller" he meets an alternate reality version of himself who proves more cooler socially adept. McKay worries that his friends and sister liked the other McKay better. The situation enabled him to mend his relationship with his sister.
