Robot characters

<span class="SFPTagline"> From SCIFIPEDIA </span>

(Redirected from Robot Characters)

Robot characters are characters appearing in sci fi works that are artificially created from non-organic materials and typically capable of self-directed actions.

The term is used loosely here to include both what science fiction calls robots generally and androids (which appear to be human). Cyborgs, which are living beings that have been augmented with mechanical parts, are not included.

Robot characters sometimes become as big a fan favorite as any other character in a work. Robby the Robot (Forbidden Planet), The Robot (B-9) (from Lost in Space), C-3PO and RD-D2 (Star Wars), and many more are just as important to the plot (and the richness of character interactions) as any of their human co-stars.

Androids often raise the question of what it means to be human. Data from Star Trek: The Next Generation famously struggles with that issue.

Some robots are not human-shaped at all, like K-9 (Doctor Who), who resembles a dog.
