Robert Wise (b. September 10, 1914 – September 14, 2005) is an Academy Award-winning American director and producer of such classic genre features as The Curse of the Cat People (1944), The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951), The Andromeda Strain(1971) and Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) . Non-genre classics on his resume include the Oscar-winning The Sound of Music (1965) , West Side Story (1961) and The Hindenburg (1975). Before beginning his career as a director, Wise worked as an editor on such films as The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939), Citizen Kane (1941), The Devil and Daniel Webster (1941) and The Iron Major.
