Since his debut in the late 70s, Robert Asprin (June 28, 1946 - May 22, 2008) has been both an author and an editor. He is best known for his editorial work on the Thieves World series as well as for his humorous MythAdventures and Phule series. His first novel was entitled The Cold Cash War and came out in 1977.
His Myth series is an extremely humorous pan-dimensional fantasy tale focusing on the adventures of a young apprentice magician named Skeeve and a demon named Aahz from the dimension of Perv. When Skeeve’s master is immediately killed in the first book of the series, Aahz takes him under his wing and helps the boy harness his growing magical powers. Together the duo has (currently) worked their way through the pages of sixteen books, all of the titles involving puns based on the word “Myth” (examples: Hit or Myth, Another Fine Myth).
The Phule series falls more into the category of science fiction and follows the misadventures of Captain Willard Phule and his misfit company of space legionnaires. Despite the odds, Phule and his Omega Company come through even though their ranks are considered a dumping ground for rejects and they are seen as the laughing stock of the entire military Space Legion. Willard Phule is the heir to the Phule Ammunitions fortune, but has been tricked into this military posting. Most chapters include wry opening commentary from his constant companion, his butler Beeker.
Asprin stopped publishing in the mid 1990's due to both the personal problem of writer’s block and a problem with the IRS. In the introduction to one of the Myth books, Asprin later labeled his financial problems resolved. Since then he has collaborated on all of his new titles since the IRS is the recipient of all money on titles where he is listed as the sole contributor.
Asprin passed away on May 22, 2008, at his home in New Orleans, Louisiana.
