Rick Jones is a fictional comic book character, known for his friendship and supporting character role in a number of Marvel Comics series over the decades. Rick is interesting because he has been a kind of teen sidekick to the Hulk, Captain America, and Captain Marvel, Rom the Spaceknight, as well as temporary holder of the superhero identity Bucky of the Silver Age of Comics. Rick has probably had more superhero-like adventures than any non-superhero character in comic book history. He also has experience as a professional folk singer, and has written and published a book about his life called “Sidekick”. Rick is also a comic book fan, and, due to his relationship with Captain Marvel and the Avengers, the Supreme Intelligence of the Kree Empire once drew on his latent psionic abilities (and something called the Destiny Force) and his memories of Golden Age comic book characters to stop an inter-galactic war between the Kree and the Skrull Empire, in an Avengers storyline called the Skrull/Kree War. Later in life, he and his wife Marlo open a comic book shop.
Historical Highlights
Rick has had a long and amazing career. Here are just some parts of it.
- After escaping from an abusive state orphanage, sixteen year old Rick Jones takes a dare from another teen-ager and drives out on the Gamma Bomb test site. He is rescued by Bruce Banner, who, caught in the explosion himself, becomes the incredible Hulk. Rick, feeling responsible for Bruce’s fate, has remained a lifelong friend to both Bruce and his powerful alter-ego.
- Rick founds the “Teen Brigade”, a network of teen-aged ham radio operators that help track the Hulk. When the Hulk is framed for attacking a train, Rick and his brigade try to signal the Fantastic Four. Loki redirects the signal to lure his brother Thor into a trap. The signal is also intercepted by Iron Man, Ant-Man, and the Wasp, which leads to the formation of The Avengers.
Trained to fight by Captain America.
- Rick travels with the group for a while, and met the newly revived Captain America after he was brought out of suspended animation. The two establish a long lasting friendship.
- When the Hulk turns on Rick during one of his uncontrollable rages, Rick is rescued by Captain America. Resuming their friendship, Rick takes on the identity Cap’s late war-time partner, Bucky, and the two become a team for a while.
- Following a misunderstanding with Cap, Rick returns to the Southwest where the Supreme Intelligence of the Kree Empire guides him to a hidden Kree outpost in a cave where Rick finds and puts on the Nega-Bands. The Nega-Bands put him in contact with the Kree hero Captain Mar-Vell, who is trapped in the Negative Zone. Rick begins a long time relationship with him, where Mar-Vell and he use the Nega-Bands take turns switching places for a period up to three hours. This leads to Rick to be instrumental in stopping the Skrull/Kree War when he is lead by the Supreme Intelligence to access the Destiny Force.
- Rick enjoys a moderately successful career as a Folk Rock singer.
- The two friends are finally both able to co-exist on Earth, and Rick is at his bedside when Mar-Vell dies of cancer.
- Rick becomes an ally to Rom the Spaceknight, and is among the heroes who help him turn back an Earth invasion of the Dire Wraiths.
- Rick re-enters the life of the Avengers when Moondragon tries to get him to use the Destiny Force to stop an Atlantean invasion force.
- Falling into a nutrient bath designed to re-integrate Banner and the Hulk, Rick begins nightly transformations into a teen-aged Hulk. He is cured when the Leonard Sterns absorbs the gamma radiation into himself, to turn himself back into the latest mutation of the Leader.
A moderately successful career in music
- On a tour publicizing his book, Rick meets and marries Marlo Chandler. She is killed by a madwoman named Jackie Schorr, and is resurrected by the Leader. Together again, the two become TV Talk Show Hosts.
- While trying to calm the Hulk down, Rick receives a glancing blow, becoming a paraplegic. Confined to a wheel chair, Rick suffers from a depression.
- Rick is drawn into a trans-temporal conflict between Kang the Conqueror and Immortus, ruler of Limbo, due to his occasional access to the Destiny Force. Rick's body is healed by the Destiny Force, but Rick takes a mortal injury while trying to stop the Time-Keepers' genocidal plans. In order to survive, he is once again linked with Genis-Vell, Mar-Vell’s son, similar in the way he was to his late father. Rick and Genis-Vell again are able to switch places, one always being trapped in the Microverse. Genis-Vell becomes the new Captain Marvel, Nega-Bands and all.
- After ending his relationship with Captain Marvel, Rick funds a group called Excelsior which is dedicated to helping teen-aged superheroes.
- Rick is playing an important role in the limited crossover series involving his old friend, called World War Hulk.
