Richard Dreyfus, born October 29, 1947 in Brooklyn, New York, is a TV and movie actor and producer.

After five years of small parts on TV series including Bewitched, Gunsmoke, and That Girl, Dreyfus gained national attention in George Lucas's 1973 film American Graffiti.

In genre films, Dreyfus is best known for his roles in Steven Spielberg's Jaws (1975), Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), and Always (1989).

Dreyfus has admitted that he based his manic portrayal of Elliot Garfield in The Goodbye Girl (1977) on writer Harlan Ellison.
