Richard Dean Anderson was born on January 23, 1950, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He got his start in television in 1976 as Dr. Jeff Webber on the venerable daytime soap opera General Hospital. After several years of one of acting's best apprenticeships, Anderson took a role in 1982 as Adam McFadden in the family drama series Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. The series stuck for only a season, and he moved on in 1983 to a role as naval pilot Lt. Simon Adams in the evening melodrama Emerald Point N.A.S., one of the many series attempting to follow up on the big successes of nighttime soaps Dallas, Dynasty, and Falcon Crest. Despite a sumptuous cast that also included Maud Adams, Dennis Weaver, Susan Dey, Jill St. John, Robert Vaughn, and Sela Ward, the series also stuttered to a halt after a single season.
The series MacGyver in 1985 garnered Anderson legions of fans from the science fiction realm. As the eponymous hero, Anderson solved problems using his noggin as often as his muscles, showcasing arcane bits of scientific knowledge as he improvised solutions using whatever he found to hand in the crisis. More than any other series hero to that time, he personified Robert A. Heinlein's Competent Man. The seriesenjoyed a good run, wrapping in 1992, with two follow-up telefilms in 1994, MacGyver: Lost Treasure of Atlantis and MacGyver: Trail to Doomsday.
Other telefilms featuring Richard Dean Anderson include Through the Eyes of a Killer (1992), In the Eyes of a Stranger (1992), Beyond Betrayal (1994), Past the Bleachers (1995), and miniseries Pandora's Clock (1996).
Anderson again took the lead in a series that was to become U.S. television's longest-running science fiction series: Stargate SG-1. Based on the Dean Devlin/Roland Emmerich 1994 movie Stargate, the series starred Anderson as Jack O'Neill, an Air Force officer who leads the SG-1 special forces team through the stargate, an alien artifact that provides a gateway to other planets. After eight seasons on the show, Anderson reduced his participation in order to spend more time with his family.
