Richard Burgi

Richard William Burgi (b. July 30, 1958 in Montclair, New Jersey) is an American actor best remembered by genre fans for his role as Detective Jim Ellison on the series The Sentinel. Burgi has also had recurring roles on several popular series such as 24, Desperate Housewives, Judging Amy and The District.

Burgi grew up in Montclair, New Jersey. His parents were involved in the performing arts but despite a creative background, Burgi did not immediately turn to acting as a career. He traveled through Europe and the US before returning to the East Coast to study acting in New York. He developed his skills appearing in commercials before landing his first noteworthy television series roles on soap operas like Another World, As the World Turns and One Life to Live. Burgi made his genre debut in the comic-based series, The Flash and also appeared in Flash III: Deadly Nightshade. After a series of guest appearances on various sitcoms and a stint on the soap Days of Our lives, he landed a recurring role on the series Viper and later the starring role in The Sentinel.

The Sentinel wrapped up in 1999 and Burgi returned to guest appearances and roles the occasional film. He appeared in the TV movie I Married a Monster in 1988, guest starred on Touched by an Angel, Twice in a Lifetime, 24, and Firefly. His film appearances include the Starship Troopers sequel, Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation, Cellular, Darklight with Shiri Appleby, Decoys, In Her Shoes with Cameron Diaz and Fun with Dick and Jane alongside Jim Carrey. In 2005, he appeared in the short-lived FOX series Point Pleasant and followed up with his role on Desperate Housewives as Susan Mayer's cheating ex-husband, Karl Mayer.

Recent roles include Hostel: Part II and The Christmas Cottage.
