René Murat Auberjonois (b. June 1, 1940) is an American actor and director born in New York, New York to a French- American family. He is best known to genre fans as the shape shifting Constable Odo on the series Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
Auberjonois was born into an artistic family. His grandfather was a notable Swiss painter and his father, Fernand was a writer. René began acting as a young child, deciding early on a career in the art. He grew up in upstate New York in an artists colony amongst musicians, actors and composers such as actors Burgess Meredith and John Houseman. It was Houseman who offered Auberjonois his first theater experience at sixteen as an apprentice in a theater in Stratford, Connecticut.
Auberjonois attended Carnegie Mellon University where he studied theater, acting and production. Following his graduation he worked with several theater companies including San Francisco's American Conservatory Theater and Los Angeles' Mark Taper Forum. He began television work in the 1960s, lending his voice to The Jetsons and in the 70s guest starring on The Mod Squad and The Flinstones Comedy Hour.
Auberjonois' long career has included many genre appearances. He has guest starred in Night Gallery, The Bionic Woman, Wonder Woman, Beyond Westworld, The Outer Limits, Eerie Indiana, Faerie Tale Theatre, Superman, Aladdin, and The Burning Zone. Several notable voice roles include Inspector Gadget, Captain Simian & The Space Monkeys, Disney's the Legend of Tarzan, The Mummy: The Animated Series, Batman: The Animated Series, Justice League, Xyber 9: New Dawn, Xiaolin Showdown, Smurfs, and The Pirates of Dark Water.
Auberjonois played a small role as Colonel West in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country before returning to the franchise as Constable Odo in Deep Space Nine. He also appeared on Enterprise in 2002 as Ezral.
