Plot

Spoiler Warning: Plot details and/or information about the ending follow. If you wish to enjoy the work first, stop reading here and return at another time.

The "Red Dwarf" was a mining ship on board which Dave Lister worked. Lister was a very low level worker but was also the only survivor of a radiation leak that killed everyone else on board other than he and his cat. He survived because he had been sentenced to eighteen months of suspended animation for smuggling the cat on board. The ship computer Holly kept Lister alive while the radiation died down, but this process took three million years leaving Lister the last member of the human race. Holly activated a holographic version of Lister's former bunkmate, Arnold Rimmer in order to keep Lister sane. Unfortunately, the two had never really gotten along. Lister's cat, Frankenstien, who had been locked in the cargo bay at the time of the leak, was actually pregnant and had given birth. Eventually this led to these cats evolving into a humanoid form, felis sapiens, and left The Cat on board, also the last surviving member of its race.

Later the sanitation mechanoid Kryten was picked up and joined the crew. For the sixth series, Lister forgot where he parked the "Red Dwarf", forcing the crew to use the smaller "Starbug" ship, and losing contact with Holly for a while. In the seventh series, the cowardly, neurotic Rimmer left his friends to pursue a life as the heroic Ace Rimmer. Later, the crew encountered a parallel universe version of themselves where Lister had died in the radiation leak (and was preserved as a hologram), and his girlfriend, Kristine Kochanski survived through being sentenced to stasis. However, due to a series of accidents and mistakes, Kochanski ends up getting stuck in the main series universe and has to join the crew.

Eventually the "Red Dwarf" and its crew are reconstructed by nanobots bringing everyone else on board, including Rimmer, back to life. However, the "Starbug" crew ended up being sentenced to two years in the brig on several convoluted charges.
