Rebels are members of a society who fight against or otherwise resist the ruling body of that society, typically seeking to overthrow its power. An organized group of rebels is refer to as a rebellion, and the adjective is rebellious.

Rebellions may eventually be successful, resulting in a change in power, or unsuccessful. When unsuccessful, the ex-rebels may become second-class citizens in defeat.

Rebels may include someone who has a legitimate or believed claim to the power. Rebellions tend to be against repressive states, since an open democracy would have other methods for regime change.

Many Sci Fi works have featured the theme of rebellion.
