Raven is a fictional superhero character owned by DC Comics, and is associated with the superhero team, called the New Teen Titans or The Titans.
Raven was a member of the Teen Titans during their 1980s revival. She, in fact brought the Titans together to battle her father Trigon, a powerful demon-like character from another dimension. She was the daughter of Trigon and a human woman named Arella. She was raised in Azareth, a community of pacifists. Azar of Azareth took her under her wing and trained to control her emotions. This was because her violent emotions would trigger her demonic heritage. Upon Azar’s death, Arella took over her training.
When Raven discovered her demonic heritage at the same time she discovered that Trigon was going to invade our dimension. She went to the Justice League at first, but Zatanna advised against trusting her, sensing the demonic part of her nature. Using her empathic powers, Raven induced dreams in the teen superheroes Robin, Beast Boy (then called Changeling), Wonder Girl, Kid Flash, Starfire and Cyborg, and succeeded in bringing them together as the New Teen Titans to battle her father. The team was ultimately successful.
Raven struggled with her demonic nature, and, at one point, became demonic and a disciple of Trigon. She has died twice and been restored to life.
Raven is, first an empath, who can absorb pain and negative emotions from others. She can teleport herself for limited distances, dramatically appearing in a whirl pf black smoke.. She also has a “Soul Self” (a shadowy astral form) which can depart her body and, under Raven’s control, can see and hear, and relay information back to Raven. The “Soul Self” can also fight for her.
Raven is currently part of the modern Teen Titans and is scheduled to be part of a new Titans revival, as of 2008.
In the Teen Titans animated series (2003-2008), Raven was voiced by Tara Strong.
