Rachel Zawadi Luttrell (January 19, 1971 Tanzania - ) is an actress best known in the role of Teyla Emmagan on the series Stargate Atlantis. She was born in Tanzania and moved to Canada at age five. Her mother is from Lushoto, Tanzania and her father is from Louisiana and is of British heritage. Rachel studied ballet at the Russian Academy of Classical Ballet and trained in voice and piano at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto with her father. She studied Shakespeare at Oxford University with the British/American Drama Association and has been acting since her teen years.
She made her professional stage debut in the Toronto premiere of Miss Saigon. Before landing the role of Teyla on Stargate Atlantis, she guest starred on Forever Knight, Street Legal, Charmed Touched by an Angel, and ER. She also played Lisette in Anne Rice's The Feast of All Saints.
Since joining the cast of Atlantis, Rachel has also acted in Stop Thief and Aviary. In 2006 she completed the film A Dog's Breakfast in which she acted alongside Atlantis co'stars David Hewlett and Paul McGillion.
On October 12, 2007, Luttrell gave birth to son, Caden Dar Bateman, her first child with stunt man Lloyd Bateman. Her pregnancy was incorporated into the series and her character, Teyla also became pregnant with a son.
