Quicksilver is a comic book superhero owned by Marvel Comics. He is a mutant with the power to run at incredible speed. He first was a foe of the X-Men, but later became a hero and member of the Avengers. He joined the Avengers with his twin sister, the Scarlet Witch. His joining was part of the Avenger’s first big roster shake-up, and the new team would consist of his twin sister, the Scarlet Witch, Hawkeye and the team leader Captain America.
He later becomes associated with the Inhumans when he marries into their royal family. The Inhumans are a race of humans altered by extraterrestrials 25,000 years ago, each with its own unique form or superhuman ability. They live in their secret refuge called Attilan, at that time hidden somewhere in the Himalayas. They first appeared in the comic book, Fantastic Four issue #45 (1965).
He is also known for being the natural son of the mutant Magneto, something he and comic book readers learn years after his first appearance. Magneto is the arch nemesis of the X-Men.
Character Origin
When Magda, wife of Magnus, who would later be known as Magneto, observes her husband's extraordinary powers explode in grief and rage, she runs from him in terror. She never tells him she is pregnant. In 1958, while in labor, she is taken in by Bova, the human-like cow evolved by the High Evolutionary on Wundagore Mountain in Transia. In seclusion on Wudagore Mountain, Magda gives birth to twins, whom she names Wanda and Pietro.
Soon after giving birth, still afraid that her husband will find her, Magda leaves a note for Bova to never reveal her relation to the twins, and then wanders off into the frozen Balkan mountains, presumably to perish.
Quicksilver with his sister, The Scarlet Witch
After trying to place the baby twins with the World War II-era hero Whizzer, who has just lost his own wife and newborn baby, the High Evolutionary places the twins in stasis until suitable foster parents can be found. Eventually, the siblings are given by the High Evolutionary into the care of a gypsy couple named Django and Marya Maximoff, who raise the children as their own. When they reach their teens, the two come into their own mutant powers. Around this time, Django is forced to steal food to feed his family. When this leads to a group of angry villagers attacking the camp, Pietro uses his incredible mutant speed to wisk his sister away. Later, they are attacked by a superstitious mob when one of Wanda's hex spheres misfires causing a house to go up in flame. They are saved by the mutant terrorist Magneto, who is actually their father Eric Magnus, but is unaware of who the siblings are. Magneto recruits them for his Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. He costumes them and names them the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, and the twins, along with the rest of the Brotherhood, combat the X-Men.
The two clearly dislike Magneto’s terrorist activities, but they remain with him for months out of obligation and fear of his reprisal. When Magneto is transferred off Earth by a powerful extraterrestrial called the Stranger, the two take the opportunity to leave and join the Avengers.
Quicksilver remains with his sister as a member of the Avengers for some time. One day, Quicksilver is injured in a battle between the Avengers and the Sentinels. The Sentinels are giant robots who are programmed to hunt and destroy mutants, long time foes of the X-Men.
Quicksilver held by the Inhumans
Lockjaw finds the injured Quicksilver. Lockjaw is a gigantic dog, who is a member of the Inhumans. Lockjaw’s power is to transport himself anywhere he wants through the dimensions of space. When he happens upon the injured Quicksilver, he transports him to Attilan, the Inhuman’s Great Refuge, located somewhere in the Himalayas. There he receives medical care. He is cared for by the beautiful Crystal, a member of the Inhumans’s royal family.
Crystal and Pietro fall in love and get married. The wedding is attended by the Avengers and the Inhuman’s good friends, the Fantastic Four. Quicksilver resigns from the Avengers to be with Crystal and the Inhumans. Later, the Inhuman’s relocate their “Great Refuge” to a special place on the moon called “the blue area”, which has an atmosphere and can sustain life. When Crystal and Pietro have a baby, they name her Luna to commemorate their new home.
Quicksilver eventually learns the truth behind his parentage. To Magneto’s disappointment, Pietro still rejects him until he gives up his terrorist ways.
Pietro and Crystal grow estranged when he becomes in charge of Attilan’s military forces and begins to neglect her. Crystal has an illicit affair, and Pietro finds out. He leaves the Great Refuge, and soon joins the mutant team X-Factor.
The Scarlet Witch eventually gains incredible reality altering powers. At the end of the House of M crossover, Wanda causes 90% of the mutants in the world to lose their powers, including Quicksilver.
In the crossover limited series, Son of M, Quicksilver has a plan to steal the Terrigan Mists of the Inhumans and use them to restore the powers of mutants. Stay tuned.
