Public Security Section 9 is a secret counter-terrorism team operated by the Japanese government in the Ghost in the Shell movie series and Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex TV series.
Formed to combat growing threats of cyber-terorrism, Section 9 is also tasked with sensitive matters such as protecting foreign ambassadors, etc. as well as other counter-terrorist tasks.
Section 9 is headed by Chief Daisuke Aramaki. Section 9's field commander is Major Motoko Kusanagi. Many of the team's agents have recieved cybernetic upgrades. All team members with the exception of Togusa are ex-military agents recruited from other branches of service; Togusa used to be a police officer before he was transfered to Section 9.
In the first season of Stand Alone Complex, Section 9 consisted of 7 field agents:
- Major Motoko Kusanagi -- Often known simply as "The Major"; one of the best CTU agents in the world, highly skilled at electronic infiltration, hand-to-hand combat, and marksmanship.
- Batou -- The Major's second-in-command, a tall, powerfully built ex-special forces soldier with a jocular attitude. Served in special forces Ranger squad in South America during World War IV, in which he acquired very advanced Ranger-issued optical implants, which are obviously not organic eyes.
- Togusa -- A former police officer transfered to Section 9, to make sure that it stays diversified to keep its investigative edge. Togusa has a wife and children, and is the least cyberized out of all of the team agents (save for the Cyberbrain communication implants which are ubiquitous in 2030's Japan).
- Ishikawa -- The team's computer infiltration specialist; although a field member, is more often seen back at headquarters carrying out electrontic infiltration coordinated with agents in the field.
- Saito -- Section 9's dedicated sniper; has a cybernetic eye and arm. First met Kusanagi during World War IV while fighting against her in Mexico.
- Borma -- Heavy gunner and explosives expert.
- Pazu -- Rumored to have some ties to the yakuza crime families before joining up
During the second season of Stand Alone Complex (2nd GIG) 3 new recruits were introduced:
- Jano -- Killed on his first mission.
- Azuma -- New recruit, becomes a full team member at the end of 2nd GIG.
- Proto -- Formerly a maintenance technician for the tachikoma light tanks, Proto is actually a prototype "bioroid" (articificially organic android; think "Replicant")
