Prometheus, also known as the X-303, was Earth's first deep space battle cruiser and its second succesful foray into interstellar ship design, following the success of the X-302.
It was built by the US Air Force, and designed using a combination of Earth and alien technology. Although the Asgard refuse to outfit Earth ships with advanced weapons, the significant contributions made by SG-1 to the Asgard, warranted rewards in the form of Asgard shields and transporters for Prometheus.
The ship is capable of reaching orbit in 30 seconds and its sublight engines can travel at 110,000 miles per second. Trinium alloys were used in the construction of its corridors and the engines, lifted from a Goa'uld Al'kesh are powered by naquadria. It is capable of transporting eight F-302 fighters.

Before the ship was completed, it was hijacked by Colonel Frank Simmons and a team of NID agents. The NID, using faulty intelligence from the goa'uld who took the body of Adrian Conrad, planned to fly the ship to a planet that supposedly had Ancient Weapons and technology. Conrad lied, delivering them into goa'uld territory instead.
In the episode "Disclosure", the existence of the Prometheus and the Stargate program was revealed to a select group of international leaders.
Prometheus was Earth's flagship for three years before it was eventually destroyed while trying to disable an Ori satellite weapon over the planet Tegalus. Prometheus' destruction cost the lives of 115 officers and other crew members including Colonel Pendergast.
Commanding Officers
The Original commander was Colonel William Ronson followed by Colonel Lionel Pendergast. General George Hammond temporarily took command in the episode Lost City, Part 2. Hammond also took Prometheus on an ill-fated trip to Atlantis in the Pegasus Galaxy, but the ship was hijacked by Vala Mal Doran while still in the Milky Way. Vala planned to exchange the ship with the Lucian Alliance for refined weapons-grade naquadah. Daniel Jackson successfully rescued the ship but Vala escaped.
