Professor X is a fictional comic book superhero, owned by Marvel Comics. He is most famous for his association with the mutant superhero group, the X-Men, whom he founded and leads.
He is considered “the most powerful mutant mind on Earth” with an array of psionic and psychic abilities that make him a force to be reckoned with. Early in his career, Xavier developed a belief that, with guidance, mutants and humans can live together peacefully. As such, he founded the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters to protect and train young mutants to use their powers for the good of humanity. He founded, trained, and has ultimate command of the X-Men and has inspired and supported various mutant teams. In his mansion in Westchester, New York, Xavier’s school seems to be an ordinary private boarding school. When the X-Men go into action in public, they wear masks and costumes and have code names. Xavier took the code name Professor X.
Xavier can read minds, project thoughts, manipulate the perceptions of others, erase their memories, cause mental paralysis, stun the minds of others with non-physical mental bolts, take full possession of a person’s mind, sense the presence of another mutant, and project himself onto the astral plane. Xavier is a genius with an expertise in genetics, psychology, and a number of physical sciences. He invented the computer Cerebro which allows him to extend his powers into the earth’s electromagnetic field, temporarily increasing the range of his powers to a world-wide level. This allows him to search the world for other mutants to protect and bring into the fold.
Professor X does not wear a superhero costume, but is easily recognized from his bald head (a side-effect of his mutant abilities) and the use of a wheel-chair as a result of losing the use of his legs from an early battle with a tyrannical alien calling himself Lucifer while traveling in Tibet. It is due to this injury that Xavier does not usually engage in open combat with his X-Men, secretly guiding, instructing, and training from the sidelines.
While a young man temporarily living in Israel, Xavier met Erik Magnus, who was also a mutant with vast magnetic powers. The two developed a friendship, though they disagreed about the potential for humans and mutants to coexist peacefully. As Magneto, Magnus would become Xavier’s and the X-Men’s arch nemesis.
Patrick Stuart portrayed Professor X in the recent trilogy of live action X-Men movies. For more appearances of the character in other media, see the X-Men article.
