Power Girl is a comic book character owned by DC Comics.

Power Girl began in The Bronze Age of Comics as an Earth-Two version of Supergirl. Earth-Two was created during the Silver Age of Comics, and was an Earth in a universe parallel to ours. It was the home of the comc book super-heroes that were around in the 1940s, including the Justice Society of America and the Superman that began his career in 1938. When Krypton exploded, she was rocketed to Earth in a much slower space ship that preserved her in suspended animation. Arriving on Earth decades later, she became a friend and partner to the now middle aged Kal-L, the Earth-Two Superman. Power Girl had her own limited series which took place on Earth-Two. She was sponsored for membership in the newly reformed Justice Society of America by her now aging semi-retired cousin. She became particularly good friends with the Bronze Age Huntress, who was the daughter of Batman and Catwoman of the 1940s. Together, the two made an interesting team, in the tradition of the Superman and Batman team.

Earth-Two was eliminated from DC Comics continuity during Crisis on Infinite Earths maxi-series in 1985, and Earth-Two was merged with Earth-One, the home of the Silver Age heroes. At this point the Earth-Two Superman was sent off to live in a pocket universe, so there would only be one Superman. In order for her to fit in the new "one earth" universe, Power Girl's origin was apparently changed so that she was no longer from Krypton. For a while, she thought she had come from ancient Atlantis, sent into the future by an Atlantean wizard.

During the Infinite Crisis maxi-series in 2006, she discovered that her memory had been clouded. She remembered her history on Earth-Two, and that it was destroyed during the Crisis on Infinite Earths. By the time the crisis was over, the Earth-Two Superman (who had returned just for this storyline) had perished, so Kara is now the sole survivor of both her Krypton and an entire parallel universe.

Taking the civilian identity of Karen Starr, Power Girl got involved in the software programming business to establish a source of income. Power Girl was a member of the Justice League for some time. She was an early member of Oracle's Birds of Prey. When a mission ended with an extreme loss of life, she was traumatized, and ended her relationship with Oracle. Now, remembering the good times she had with the Justice Society of America back on Earth-Two, Power Girl has decided that her place is with the current Justice Society.

Over the years, the comic book artists began drawing Power Girl in a way that emphasized her breasts and her sex appeal. Like the She-Hulk character, this interpretation has added to her popularity. Writers have slowly begun to play off of this, and it has now become a part of her character.

Animated Version

Power Girl appeared as a character on the animated series produced by Warner Brothers, Justice League (2001). In this very different version of the character, Power Girl was an adult clone of Supergirl, created by the Cadmus Project, a shadowy government research and development facility, as part of a program to create a possible defense against the Justice League should they turn rogue.
