Very loosely, planets are bodies that circle a sun that are not themselves suns. The specific definition is a matter of some debate, as seen by the controversy when Pluto was downgraded to a "Dwarf Planet" on August 24, 2006. At that same time, two other objects were effectively upgraded to the "dwarf planet" status.

Following the revision in 2006, the recognized planets in our Solar System are:
