Plot

Dan Vasser, a San Francisco reporter, finds himself jumping back in time on the day of his wedding anniversary. He finds himself at past points in his own life, still in San Francisco. He saves the life of a man about to commit suicide, Neal Gaines, and comes across his presently deceased fiancee, Livia at points before they became involved and later after their engagement. Dan runs into two different versions of Livia one of whom also appears to be a time traveler. Before disappearing, time traveling Livia indicates that his time jumping serves a purpose. Dan quickly realizes she is referring to Neal Gaines whose life he appears to be tracking on his leaps.

In the present, Dan's disappearances put a strain on his marriage and cause his wife to start an intervention after it appears he crashed his car and left the scene. His friends and family believe he has a drug or alcohol problem and Katie is unwilling to believe his story about time traveling. To prove to her that he is being truthful he buries her wedding ring along with a newspaper in a box on the grounds of the house they will one day occupy, while in the year 1997. He continues to follow Neal Gaines after his research in the present leads him to realize that Gaines' family was murdered. Despairing over the fact that his wife and son were going to leave him, he decided to kill them. Dan's interference saves their lives allowing Gaines' son to grow up and become a doctor who would, in turn, save the lives of others.

Returning to the present, Dan's brother Jack warns him that he is going to lose his family. Katie is angry at him over his days-long disappearances. To prove to her that everything he has said is true, he digs up the long-buried box and presents to her, her wedding ring.
