Philip Kaufman (b. October 23, 1936 in Chicago, Illinois) is an American screenwriter and director. As a screenwriter he may be best known to genre fans for his contributions to the plot of Raiders of the Lost Ark. He is also credited on the 1992 Indiana Jones spoof film Indiana Jed, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and the 2008 fourth installment of the Indiana Jones film franchise. His other notable work includes The Wanderers, The Outlaw Josey Wales, the controversial Henry & June, The Right Stuff, Fearless Frank, and Rising Son. He also served as a director on Fearless Frank, The White Dawn, The Unbearable Lightness of Being, Quills, and Twisted.
Kaufman attended the University of Chicago and later Harvard Law School. He won the Prix de la Nouvelle Critique at Cannes for his short film debut, Goldstein.
