Peter "Pete" Shanahan is a fictional character on the series Stargate SG-1 portrayed by David De Luise. Pete is a friend of Mark Carter who set him up with sister Samantha Carter. The two struck up a romantic relationship but he came to suspect her job analyzing deep space radar telemetry at the Cheyenne Mountain Complex was more than it appeared. Unable to quell his curiosity, he investigated further and confirmed that her job was indeed top secret.
While following her, he came face to face with the Goa'uld Osiris, and got his first glimpse into Sam's real job, traveling to the other worlds and battling aliens. Pete was injured in the incident and Carter was given clearance to inform him of the SGC and its mission ("Chimera").
Carter later called on him for help investigating a murder in Teal'c's apartment building for which Teal'c was believed responsible. Pete quickly studied the scene and determined Teal'c was being framed. He joined Carter and a SWAT team in a rescue of Daniel Jackson from the NID. After the incident, Carter agreed to marry him.
Pete requested a transfer to Colorado Springs to be near Carter and surprised her by buying a house. Carter began reconsidering their future together and decided to end their engagement. Pete was disappointed. ("Threads"). It is assumed that Pete went back to Denver to continue his career as a cop.
Pete had difficulties in his past and believed he would have ended up in jail if not for the intervention of a police officer who changed his life. It was this cop who inspired him to take up a career in law enforcement.
He was married before his relationship with Carter but the marriage became strained and ultimately ended when his wife proved unable to deal with his long hours and the constant worrying.
