Peter Coyote (b. October 10, 1942) is an American actor, voice artist, and author born in New York to Morris Cohon and Ruth Fidler and raised in Colver, Pennsylvania. He has performed voice work for the 2002 Winter Olympics and has served as an announcer for the Academy Awards. Coyote attended Grinnell College where he earned his BA in English Literature in 1964. He moved to California where he attended San Fransico State University for a Masters Degree in creative Writing.
While in San Francisco, he joined the San Francisco Mime Troupe and performed radical political street theater. His work writing and directing with the trope resulted in the troupe's arrest several times for their controversial performances. He cowrote the play Olive Pitts which won an Obie Award from The Village Voice. He became a prominent member of the San Francisco community during the late sixties to mid 70s and founded the group known as the Diggers which provided housing and medical aid to runaways. In 1975, He became a member of the California State Arts Council and was elected chairman, a task he fulfilled with great success. In his tenure as Chairman, expenses dropped 50% to 15% and the council's budget rose from one to fourteen million dollars a year.
Coyote returned to acting on stage at the Magic Theater in 1978. He was spotted by an agent during an appearance in True West. He made his film debut in Die Laughing (1980) and has since appeared in over seventy films. He began performing voice overs in the 1980s and won an Emmy Award for his narration of The Meji Revolution. He has narrated several documentaries including Destination: Lost, a clip show showing the main plot points of the ABC series Lost, National Geographic Explorer and The American Experience. Coyote's notable film appearances include E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, The Legend of Billie Jean, Sphere, Patch Adams, Erin Brockovich, A Walk to Remember, Femme Fatale and Shadow of Fear. He has made appearances on HBO's Deadwood, Commander in Chief, The 4400, and The Inside.
Coyote is fluent in French and Spanish and has appeared in several European films. He currently lives in Marin County, California, where has resided since the 1970s. He maintains an interest in politics and is a member of variety of societies, including the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences and the Players Club. In 1997, he was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention and wrote several articles for Mother Jones magazine.
