Pavel Chekov is a fictional character in the TV series Star Trek: The Original Series portrayed by actor Walter Koenig.
Ensign Chekov began as a navigator on the starship Enterprise under the command of Captain James T. Kirk. The character joined the series at the start of the second season, an attempt by the show’s producers to create a character to whom young people could relate. As a member of the international cast of characters, Chekov was proud of his Russian heritage, and spoke with a pronounced Russian accent. He served on the Enterprise during the show’s second and third seasons.
Chekov was promoted to Lieutenant some time after the conclusion of the series, and was the ship’s Chief Security Officer by the time of Star Trek: The Motion Picture. By Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Chekov served aboard the U.S.S. Reliant under Captain Clark Terrell. When the Reliant was destroyed, Chekov returned to the Enterprise once again. Years later, he was a guest of honor during the maiden voyage of the Enterprise-B in the movie Star Trek: Generations.
