Patrick Dempsey (b. January 13, 1966, Lewiston, Maine) is an Emmy Award-nominated American actor well known as Dr. McDreamy/Dr. Derek Shepherd on the ABC series Grey's Anatomy. Dempsey grew up in Maine and attended Buckfield High School where he was a state downhill skiing champion. His rise to stardom began in the 80s when he placed second at the 1981 International Jugglers Competition. It was the beginning of his performing career. He made his debut three years later in Heaven Help Us and followed up with an uncredited role in the sci fi comedy, The Stuff and a meatier role in the comedy Meatballs III: Summer Job. In 1986, Dempsey was cast in the short-lived series Fast Times based on the film Fast Times at Ridgemont High.
Among Dempsey's better known contributions to film and television are Loverboy, the TV movie 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Sweet Home Alabama, About a Boy,the Disney romance Enchanted and the romantic comedy Made of Honor.
