Patricia Collins Wrede (b. 1953, Chicago, Illinois) is an American author best known for her fantasy fiction. Wrede began writing in her early teen years. Following high school, she attended Carleton College in Minnesota where she majored in Biology. Shortly after graduating in 1974, she began working on her first novel, Shadow Magic]. The novel was completed five years later and Wrede devoted herself to writing.

In 1977, Wrede graduated from the University of Minnesota where she earned her MBA. She went to work as a financial analyst and accountant, eventually working for B. Dalton Booksellers and the Dayton Hudson Corporation. She completed her first novel in 1978, and in 1980, still an unpublished author formed the writer's group that later became known as "The Scribblies" with Pamela Dean, Emma Bull, Will Shetterly, Steven Brust, and Nate Bucklin. In April, 1980, her first novel was sold to Ace Books and published in 1982. In the same year she met Lillian Stewart Carl who introduced her to Lois McMaster Bujold.

By 1985, Wrede was working on her fifth book. She officially gave up any other work to focus solely on her writing. She has since published over twelve novels.
