- For other uses see Parasite (disambiguation)
Parasite typically refers to an organism that lives inside or on another organism and may depend upon it for survival. A parasite is a detriment to its host, as opposed to a symbiote, in which neither is harmed by the relationship and both may even benefit. In science fiction, parasites are a noted theme. Often they infect humans or other intelligent creatures and alter or control their behavior. Perhaps the most common example are the Goa'uld in the TV series Stargate SG-1. Other examples have appeared in Star Trek series and The Outer Limits among others.
