Pan's Labyrinth or El Laberinto del Fauno is a 2006 fantasy film from Mexican writer and director Guillermo del Toro.
The movie was filmed in Spain and premiered at the Cannes Film Festival on May 27, 2006. The film opened in UK theaters on November 30 and US theaters on December 29, 2006.
Pan's Labyrinth was nominated for a Golden Globe award for Best Foreign Language Film and was Mexico's entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards. It won three Oscar s for its cinematography, makeup and art direction. It also won awards from the New York Film Critic's Circle, The San Francisco Film Critic's Circle and the Los Angeles Film Critics Association.

Plot
Pan's Labyrinth tells the story of a young girl, Ofelia, in post civil war Spain who travels with her pregnant mother, Carmen, and stepfather Captain Vidal, to their new home, an abandoned mill converted into a military outpost in the Northern Spanish countryside. Her stepfather is a cruel military man who has no affection for his stepdaughter. The grounds of their new home is patrolled by soldiers charged with rooting out the resistance fighters remaining in the mountains.
With her mother confined to bed for the remainder of her pregnancy, Ofelia finds sympathy with housekeeper, Mercedes. Mercedes shows her a neglected garden and a lonely Ofelia escapes into a world of fantasy and discovers a labyrinth guarded by a Faun. He informs her that she is the daughter of a deceased king and to gain entry into her kingdom, she must complete three dangerous tasks. Ofelia enters a world both fantastic and terrifying filled with fairies and a scary Pale Man.
