PSI Factor: Chronicles of the Paranormal was a fictional TV series that followed a team of scientists who investigated incidents of paranormal phenomena. The weekly hour-long series was hosted and co-produced by actor Dan Aykroyd. Although the show was fictional, it was said to be based on cases that were investigated by the real-life O.S.I.R. (Office of Scientific Investigation and Research). The format in the first season featured two half-hour cases per episode. Some cases featured different team leaders and members. The teams relied heavily on high-tech equipment to record and analyze each case. The first-season episodes concentrated more on the cases, resulting in very little plot or characterization. Cases included such supernatural phenomena as hauntings, UFO encounters, miracles, telepathy, reincarnation, time travel, near-death experiences, and the like. The series was viewed by some as a copy of The X-Files, but it was intriguing in its own unique way.

The team leaders (or case managers) in the first season were Professor Connor Doyle (Paul Miller) and Dr. Curtis Rollins (Maurice Dean Wint). Each man would lead a different team on different cases. Team members included: Lindsay Donner (Nancy Anne Sakovich), a psycho-biologist; Peter Axon (Barclay Hope), a physicist/statistician; and Professor Anton Hendricks (Colin Fox), a psychiatrist/physician. Also featured were O.S.I.R. Director of Operations Frank Elsinger (Nigel Bennett), Security Coordinator Ray Donahue (Peter MacNeill), zoologist Lennox Cooper (Peter Blais), and pathologist Dr. Claire Davison (Soo Garay). Anthropologist Dr. Natasha Constantine (Lisa LaCroix) and investigator Sandra Miles (Lindsay Collins) were seen occasionally.

Changes to the show were made in Season 2. Doyle, who was seemingly killed in the first-season finale, was replaced by Matt Prager (Matt Frewer). The show began featuring only one case per episode and was focused more on drama and characterization. Dr. Rollins (Wint) was gone as a regular character, although he did return later in the series. Conspiracy theorist Michael Kelly (played by Michael Moriarty) was now featured as a recurring character who gave the team information from time to time. Prager came into conflict often with Peter Axon over methods of investigation and leadership, thus creating tension in the team.

In the fourth and final season, more changes took place. Anton Hendricks (Colin Fox) replaced Elsinger (the departing Nigel Bennett) as director of operations and was seen less on the show. Mia Stone, a parapsychologist, joined the team to replace Anton. She was played by Joanne Vannicola. Frewer left the show after a few episodes into the season and his character, Prager, was written out. In one episode late in the season, Connor Doyle was discovered to be alive. It was revealed that his death was faked and he had been held prisoner in a research facility. His character was also revealed to be a human/alien hybrid. Also, in the series finale, Mia apparently died.

The show, co-created by Peter Aykroyd, was filmed in Canada and aired from September 1996 to September 2000 in first-run syndication. Eighty-eight episodes of the series were produced and aired. Repeats aired for awhile on the TNT cable channel. Some merchandise based on the show was produced: A book published in 1997 that featured story summaries from the first 15 episodes; several DVDs (Region 2 only) and VHS tapes collecting various episodes were released in 1998.
