OtherSpace is the online saga created by former journalist Wes Platt. It began in 1998 and ran until June 27, 2004, covering five years of online story-telling. On June 28, 2004 OtherSpace: New Journeys opened. Under the new title, the game continues to build on the original fictional worlds and characters with renewed emphasis on its story arcs.
The overall style of OtherSpace is space opera, with dramatic elements figuring prominently in promotions of the game and in the game itself. Within this framework, players have created stories representing a diverse array of genres. The treatment of technology and culture in the game tends to lean towards soft science fiction. OtherSpace advertises friendliness toward newbies, a claim reflected in player attitudes toward them and in the procedures for creating a character. However, some potential players find the quantity of in-character knowledge and differences from other online environments, such as MUDs, to be daunting.
