Orphans of the Sky is a 1963 novel, written by Robert A. Heinlein, consisting of two 1941 novelettes, Universe and Common Sense. Universe was first published in two parts in Astounding Science Fiction and later, by Dell in 1951. The stories are part of Heinlein's Future History cycle.

The novel tells the story of scientists Hugh Hoyland and Alan Mahoney, as they work with a mutant named Joe-Jim Gregory to relearn how to control the Vanguard, a centuries-lost generation ship.

Heinlein added no new material to the stories for the novel's release.

It's usually best to give a very general overview to a story first, then plot details. When including the plot or essential details in your article (which could ruin the pleasure of discovery for some readers), it is important to include the spoiler tag before any give-away material.
