Orlin, as played by Cameron Bright in "The Fourth Horseman"

Orlin is a powerful being in the Stargate universe. Sean Patrick Flanery originated the role of Orlin, who is an outcast Ancient, forced to remain on the dead planet Velona after his interference in the inhabitants' struggle against the Goa'uld led to tragedy. Breaking the rules of the Ancients, Orlin gave the people Ancient technology—weapon specifications in Velonan materials, which they used to construct an advanced Ancient space gun.

Spoiler Warning: Plot details and/or information about the ending follow. If you wish to enjoy the work first, stop reading here and return at another time.

After defeating the Goa'uld, the people of Velona fell into a vortex of power and corruption, and planned to use the weapon to conquer their enemies on other planets. In order to prevent these events from occurring, the Ancients decimated the entire civilization, leaving Velona's cities in rubble and its people extinct. The Ancients condemned the disobedient Orlin to live among the wreckage, and walk among the dead for eternity.

The arrival of SG-1 brought new opportunities to Orlin. He quickly became attached to Major Samantha Carter and tried to merge with her thoughts, causing her to black out. Orlin, concealed in an invisible form, left the planet with SG-1 and returned with Carter to her home. He remained inside her residence, watching her while she slept, then declaring his love. He proved he had come through the Stargate by crossing through a table.

Carter had a team search the house, but Orlin kept out of sight. She believed all surveillance devices had been removed, and was unaware that some devices remained, but her conviction was enough to bring Orlin out of hiding. He revealed himself to be an Ascended being.

For weeks, Orlin worked his way into Carter's confidence. They took walks together and discussed the future. Orlin gave up his powers as an Ascended being, and became human once more, planning to spend the rest of his life with Carter. But the Pentagon had been observing his presence, and had taken note of the high-tech acquisitions arriving at Carter's home. While she was on-base, Orlin ordered equipment from the Internet, building a miniature Stargate in her basement. When the NID showed up, Orlin activated the Stargate and traveled back to Velona. Carter followed him. On Velona, Orlin discovered the humans planned to study the Ancient technology, and refused to accept that the same fate would fall upon Earth.

After a member of SG-16 shot Orlin, the Ancients believed he had redeemed himself. They re-Ascended him as a reward for his attempt to sacrifice himself for the Tau'ri. The space gun could not be stopped from activating, but the Ascended Orlin took the core of the naquadah reactor that powered it into the atmosphere, where it detonated. The space gun was destroyed, so SG-16 could never replicate the technology.

Later, in "The Fourth Horseman, Part 1," Orlin returned in the form of a child, played by Cameron Bright. This time, he is permanently human, and his child form is intentional; he needs to be in that form in order to retain even a fraction of the knowledge of the Ancients. He succeeds in developing a line of research that might cure the Ori plague, but it requires material (Prior DNA) that the SGC does not possess. Orlin begins to loses his memory, and ends in a mental institution at the conclusion of "The Fourth Horseman, Part 2." Before he forgets everything, he tells the SGC that the Origin religion and its promise of Ascension are lies.
