Origin is the religion created by the Ori, a fictional alien race on the TV series Stargate SG-1. The Ori are a group of Ascended Ancients who use their advanced technology and knowledge of the universe to manipulate humans into worshiping them as gods. In exchange for complete devotion, the Ori promise to ascend their followers at the end of their lives.
According to the ascended being Orlin, The Ori gain power from the devotion of their followers. Their followers prostrate for up to six hours a day. Orlin also claims the Ori do not fulfill their promises to ascend their followers, rendering thier lifetime of worship pointless and preventing them from pursuing their own enlightenment. Ascending others would mean sharing their power.
The Ori require a vast number of followers to gain the power they need. As a result they seek to convert all humans to their worship and destroy any opposition. The Ori seek to gain enough power to destroy their opposition on the Ascended plane.
The religous text of the Ori is known as the Book of Origin. According to their teachings, the Ori created human life in their galaxy. A more advanced culture, that of the Alterans, preceeded them however. The Ori keep the truth of this history from their followers. When artifacts evidencing a previous, more advanced culture are found, the Priors confiscate it to prevent knowledge of it from spreading.
Several comparisons to early Christianity and Militant Islam have been made by fans and critics. Origin has aspects of general extremism and for some, parallels the ongoing debate between religion and science.
