Orbanians)
Orban is a fictional planet in the Milky Way on the series Stargate SG-1. The planet was settled by Teotihuacáns from the ancient Aztec civilization, brought there by the Goa'uld. The Orbanian world, though technologically advanced, bears much evidence of their Aztec history in the architecture of their cities, which incorporate ziggurat designs.
Orbanians
SG-1 first encountered the Orbanians in the episode "Learning Curve". They quickly formed an alliance with a promise to trade and exchange ideas. The Orbanians were beyond Earth in technological development and became advanced at an extraordinary rate.
A young girl, Merrin, was sent to Earth to instruct Samantha Carter on the workings of Naquadah Generator technology her people had developed. It was soon discovered that the Orbanians were unfamiliar with the concept of teaching. On Orban, select children, called Urrone are implanted with nanites at birth. The nanites enable the children to learn and process vast amounts of information quickly. When the child reaches age 12, all the nanites are removed in a ceremony called Averium and one is given to each Orbanian citizen thus spreading their knowledge throughout the population.
The Averium is not without its price, however. Once the nanites are harvested the child returns to an infantile stage. The nanites acted as additional synapses in their brains and once removed the children retain none of the knowledge they've gained in the past twelve years. They are well cared for but as the Orbanians have no concept of teaching, the children remain in that state for life.
Jack O'Neill and SG-1 found the concept appalling and Jack sought to remedy the situation by kidnapping Merrin and taking her to a local elementary school where she experienced art and playing with other children for the first time. Though the Orbanians and General George Hammond opposed O'Neill's methods, his interference proved beneficial to Merrin and Orban. When she returned to Orban and underwent the Averium process, her experiences on Earth were passed on to the entire population, transforming their entire society. The Orbanians gained the concept of teaching their children in the traditional manner.
