Oracle is Barbara Gordon, adopted daughter of Police Commissioner Gordon. During The Silver Age of Comics, Barbara was Batgirl. Now, in the Modern Age of Comics, Barbara has lost the use of her legs after taking a bullet from the Joker, In the aftermath, now wheelchair bound, Barbara struggled with finding a reason to go on. She decided to create a new superhero identity for herself. She combined her detective skills with the state of the art computer facilities, she became Oracle, information resource to the entire superhero community. Appearing on the computer screens of selected crime fighters in the form of an anonymous sexless avatar, she would offer her services to various groups and individuals, including the Justice League and Batman. Eventually, she would manage a group of independent minded superhero women, and found the international crime fighting organization Birds of Prey. At first her headquarters was an old clock tower in Gotham City, Oracle now operates from the top floor of the Dalton Building in Metropolis.
Barbara has a long-time friendship and "on again, off again" romance with Dick Grayson, formerly Robin and now the superhero Nightwing.
