One Season Wonders

<span class="SFPTagline"> From SCIFIPEDIA </span>

One Season Wonders are TV Series that ran only one season (or less).

It takes a lot of effort to get a series on tv. Scripts are written, stars are cast, and typically a pilot (sample program) is produced. It is generally hoped that the show will run as long as possible, or at least long enough to make more money through syndication.

When a network (or other television outlet) decides to broadcast a series, it is a big commitment. Not only are they clearing a space (possibly bumping a more profitable program), they need to promote it (which can also be an expensive proposition).

Most of the time, a series will only get an order for a single season's worth of episodes (the number has declined over time). It's possible they will only order a few episodes, and then make the decision as to whether it gets picked up or not part way through the season.

Many shows do not make it past one season (or even that far). Fans, who are less concerned about the profit a show makes, may continue to have strong interest even after a show is cancelled. Sci Fi fans are notorious for dedicated attention to a show that never caught on with the mainstream. Re-runs, reunion shows, movie adaptations and even fan produced material may blur the fact for them that the original show was so short-lived.

Look at the shows listed in Scifipedia, and some of them with the most dedicated fandom may have been One Season Wonders.
